Marketing Your Green Initiative With Recycling Reporting

Monday, April 25, 2016

When it comes to marketing your green business, there’s more to environmental responsibility than meets the eye. Incorporating green business practices can provide the opportunity to connect with environmentally conscious consumers and businesses. Are you ready to start publicizing your reduced impact? Here’s how to get started.

  1. Know Your Customers. Why should they care? It’s important to share how you’re making an impact in a way that is meaningful to the end user. How can your green initiative fit into their lifestyle? In the hotel industry, reminding consumers that the CFL bulbs in their rooms use less energy and are properly recycled after use increases their green perception without taking anything away from their hotel experience.
  2. Avoid “greenwashing.” Be transparent about what green means to you. What are you actively doing to reduce your impact? What certifications does your organization have? There’s a big difference between encouraging your employees to carpool to work and actively recycling all of your fluorescent bulbs, batteries, and electronics.
  3. Utilize your reporting. In business-to-business corporations, tracking and publicizing green progress provides the opportunity to market your results to a new type of customer.  Air Cycle offers online, official Certificates of Recycling, issued to facilities after recycling waste with EasyPak or an Air Cycle bulk pickup. Tracking the amounts and types of universal waste recycled not only proves to regulatory officials that you’re recycling your waste, but also provides the opportunity to market your progress.
Air Cycle’s customers have seen the benefits of using their recycling reporting to market their green efforts firsthand. “Our customers in our buildings want to see proof that we are recycling our waste properly,” says Scott of CBRE. “All we have to do is look up the recycling certificate online and print it out to show them how well we’re doing.”

How are you including green reporting in your current corporate environmental plan?
