The Hazards of Mismanaging Hazardous Waste

Monday, April 16, 2012
Yet another facility suffered the results of improper hazardous waste management recently when Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, AK agreed to pay a $45,700 fine stemming from infractions in the handling of mercury-containing fluorescent lamps and other materials.

According to this article from the Fairbanks Daily News, the violations "occurred under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)" and included "failure to have adequate training plan in place for facility workers handling hazardous waste, improper labeling to clearly identify hazardous waste, failure to conduct regular inspections of hazardous waste containers and improper management of fluorescent lamps containing mercury."

The good news is that it is possible for facilities to avoid the potential for negative PR and financial loss, not to mention the safety risk, of improper lamp disposal by recycling spent lamps!
