Go Green for Earth Day

Friday, April 27, 2012
Last weekend, thousands celebrated Earth Day on April 22. The UN-designated event is held in over 175 countries around the world, and began in 1970, bringing increased awareness of the need to protect the environment.

At LampRecycling.com, we're happy to be helping build awareness of why mercury-containing wastes are dangerous, the harm to the environment of improperly disposing of them, and the ways that they can be safely and efficiently recycled.

We offer EasyPak™ prepaid mail-in containers for recycling spent fluorescent lamps, ballasts, batteries, and electronic waste at facilities of less than 150,000 square feet.

Why not take a moment in honor of Earth Day to learn how recycling can be cost-effective, and can help keep your facility and the environment free of the hazards of mercury?

The Hazards of Mismanaging Hazardous Waste

Monday, April 16, 2012
Yet another facility suffered the results of improper hazardous waste management recently when Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, AK agreed to pay a $45,700 fine stemming from infractions in the handling of mercury-containing fluorescent lamps and other materials.

According to this article from the Fairbanks Daily News, the violations "occurred under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)" and included "failure to have adequate training plan in place for facility workers handling hazardous waste, improper labeling to clearly identify hazardous waste, failure to conduct regular inspections of hazardous waste containers and improper management of fluorescent lamps containing mercury."

The good news is that it is possible for facilities to avoid the potential for negative PR and financial loss, not to mention the safety risk, of improper lamp disposal by recycling spent lamps!

Farewell to T12 Fluorescent Lamps

Thursday, April 5, 2012
After many months of reports and articles about preparing for the change, the countdown to the phase-out of T12 fluorescent lamps is finally drawing to a close. July, 2012 marks the cease in production of many of the most common T12 fluorescent lamp types, and the shift to more energy-efficient T8 and T5 lamps.

While the unavailability of T12 lamps may pose a challenge to managing a facility lighting system, the phase-out has a silver lining: financial incentives to make the upgrade from T12s, and cost-savings from reduced energy bills and lower system maintenance costs with the new lamps.

This article from CleanTechnica runs the numbers on what facilities can gain from an upgrade to T8 and T5 lamps.
